Description
The building is a former stable block and adjoining cart shed, dating from the late 18th century, with later 19th-century alterations and a late 20th-century restoration. Constructed of brick, it has hipped and gabled pantile roofs and gabled slate roofs.
The two-storey stable block, located to the right, has a five-window range. Projecting end bays feature a string course and coped gables. An elliptical-arched carriage entrance is present on the left, with a pair of boarded doors. The right entrance has a pair of half-glazed doors under a lintel. A pair of plain sashes with splayed lintels is centrally placed to the left, and a shallow recess features a wooden infill panel and two eight-pane windows to the right. Below, a plain sash with a concrete lintel is flanked to the left by a wide door and to the right by a door with a splayed lintel. A pair of half-glazed carriage doors with a wooden lintel are followed by a boarded door with an overlight.
The two-storey cart shed, to the left, has renewed shaped bargeboards and a finial. A central round-arched window contains nine panes of glass. Below are a pair of partly glazed sliding board doors, flanked by single-pane windows with toplights.
These stables were likely ancillary buildings to the home of Richard Baker, a tobacco merchant involved in the development of the area in the late 18th century.
