Description
The lamp standard located on the pavement at the junction with Bainton Close in Beverley is a late Georgian cast iron structure, dating from after 1826. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with stilted arches on each face of the lower step, and eagle's heads on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the style of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, the column rises to a section inspired by Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern. The lamp standard was relocated to its current position in late 2017.
