Description
The lamp standard located adjacent to the Minster railings opposite No. 4, Minster Moorgate, is a late Georgian cast iron structure, dating from after 1826. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and an eagle's head erased on each face of the upper step. Above this, there is an octagonal step leading to the column, which is designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. A narrow collar supports a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
