Description
The lamp standard located in the pavement east of the Minster entrance in Beverley dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron structure, likely made by William Square. It features a stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and on opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions 'I. MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step that is designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
