Description
The lamp standard located on the pavement west of the Minster entrance in Beverley is a late Georgian cast iron structure, dating from after 1826. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, while the upper step displays the name 'CROSSKILL' on each face. Above this is an octagonal step leading to the column, which is designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Rising from a narrow collar is a section that mimics the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
