Description

This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard located in the pavement east of the North transept of Beverley Minster. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley after 1826. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. The column is octagonal and designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, which symbolizes a disused weapon of war. From a narrow collar, a section rises that is modeled on Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, and it is topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
