Description
The lamp standard located in the pavement west of the Minster's North transept in Beverley dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron piece made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it is inscribed with the words 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1825'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. At the top, it is surmounted by a modern copper gas-type lantern.
