Description
The Old Vicarage is a building with parts dating from the medieval period, 1703, and the early 19th century. The front facing Eastgate is early 19th century, featuring two storeys constructed of white brick. The first floor has three blank windows, while the ground floor has two, all topped with stone arched heads and keystones carved with a feather motif. The doorway is framed by reeded wooden jambs with paterae, leading to a six-panelled door and a fanlight. There is also a door in the screen wall to the yard, which is topped by a canted blocking course with anthemion decorations, above a light stone cornice. The roof is slate.
The south front, which faces Minster Yard, presents a symmetrical design with a tall early 19th-century block at the Eastgate end, made of white brick. This section features a large triple window on both the upper and lower floors, a simple cornice, and a slate roof. Extending westward from this pavilion is a long, low wing, also refaced in white brick in the early 19th century, which has four windows on the first floor and a triple window along with a mid-19th century Gothic bay in stone on the ground floor, as well as a single window and a glazed door. The eaves are made of wood, and there are three gabled dormers on the gabled pantile roof. Further to the west is a lower one-storey wing built of red brick, featuring two large windows, wooden eaves gutter, and a pantile roof.
Inside, the staircase has a closed string with large turned balusters, and the landing features spiral twisted balusters, plain newels with finials, drop finials, and a simply moulded handrail. One ground floor room has fielded panelling up to dado height, with a chimney piece that includes a moulded architrave, pulvinated frieze, and moulded mantel shelf, along with a fielded panel and box cornice above. There are also four linenfold panels that are said to have been brought from Old Suffolk Place in Hull.
