Description
This is a late Georgian lamp standard, likely dating from after 1826, and presumed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp is constructed of cast iron and was originally located in front of number 14, Toll Gavel. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step and a wreath on each face of the upper step. Above this is an octagonal step shaped like a fasces-minus-axehead. A narrow collar supports the column, which is modelled on the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps. The lamp is topped with a copper gas-type lantern of a more modern date. The lamp standard was moved to its current position on the pavement in front of the boundary of numbers 16 and 18, New Walk, in late 2017.
