Description
The lamp standard located on the pavement in front of No. 8 New Walk in Beverley is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1824 to 1826. This late Georgian lamp standard was made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, the base is inscribed with "I. MALAM" and "THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824." Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step, designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, the column is modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps and is topped with a copper gas-type lantern of more recent origin. The lamp standard was relocated to its current position in late 2017.
