Description
In front of 18 Newbegin in Beverley, there is a late Georgian lamp standard dating from 1824 to 1826, made by John Malam of Sheffield. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1826'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step, designed in the form of fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
