Description
The lamp standard located in the pavement west of No 26 Newbegin in Beverley dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron piece made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1826'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, culminating in a modern copper gas-type lantern.
