Description

The lamp standard located in the pavement outside No. 2, Beaver House, was constructed between 1824 and 1826. This late Georgian piece is made of cast iron and was created by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it displays the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step is adorned with a wreathed shield that includes a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, culminating in a modern copper gas-type lantern.
