Description
This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, dating from after 1826, located in the pavement north-west of No 19 Butcher Row in Beverley. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and the word 'CROSSKILL' on each face of the upper step. Above this, there is an octagonal step leading to the column, which is designed in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. A narrow collar supports a section that is modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
