Description
The lamp standard located in the pavement south of Newbegin Bar House is a late Georgian cast iron structure, dating from after 1826. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. Rising from the base is an octagonal column designed in the form of fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. At the top, a narrow collar supports a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, which is topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
