Description

This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, dating from 1824 to 1826, situated in the pavement directly in front of No. 16, Newbegin House in Beverley. The lamp standard was made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. The faces of that step display the words ‘I MALAM’ and ‘THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824’ on opposite sides. Above are wreathed shields with lion masks on each face of the upper step. The base continues with an octagonal step to the column, moulded in the form of a fasces-minus-axehead. A narrow collar supports a section modelled on Pompeiian bronze lamp standards, topped with a copper gas-type lantern, which is a modern addition.
