Description
This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard located in the pavement outside No. 2 Beverley Westwood Road, dating from 1824 to 1826. Made by John Malam of Sheffield, the lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it is inscribed with the words "I. MALAM" and "THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824." Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step in the form of a fasces minus axehead, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section designed to resemble Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
