Description
The lamp standard outside No. 7 on Willow Grove in Beverley dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron piece made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, the words "I. MALAM" and "THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1826" are inscribed. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from an octagonal step shaped like a fasces minus an axe head, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section designed to resemble Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
