Description
The lamp standard located in front of the north wing of The Hall was built between 1824 and 1826. This late Georgian lamp standard is made of cast iron and was produced by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it displays the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step is adorned with a wreathed shield that has a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, culminating in a modern copper gas-type lantern.
