Description

The lamp standard in the courtyard of The Hall was built between 1824 and 1826 and is an example of late Georgian cast iron work made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions 'I MALAM' and 'THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824'. Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column rises from a narrow collar and is designed in the style of Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
