Description
The lamp standard outside No 17 on Beverley Willow Grove dates from 1824 to 1826 and is a late Georgian cast iron piece made by John Malam of Sheffield. It features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step. On opposite faces, it bears the inscriptions "I. MALAM" and "THORNCLIFFE IRON WORKS 1824." Each face of the upper step displays a wreathed shield with a lion mask. The column is octagonal and designed in the form of a fasces minus the axe head, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
