Description

This is a late Georgian cast iron lamp standard, dating from after 1826, and is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with a stilted arch on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. The column rises from an octagonal step and is designed in the form of a fasces minus axehead, which symbolizes a disused weapon of war. Above a narrow collar, there is a section that is modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern.
