Description

No 62 North Bar Without is a Grade II* listed building, built for N Grantham around 1732. It is a two-storey structure made of red brick, topped with a roof of graded Westmorland slates. The building features two pedimented dormers with sliding casement sashes, and an early 19th-century cornice along the roof.

The front has a central break with five windows, which have painted gauged voussoirs and keystones. The six-panel door is framed by a plain round-headed arch, with a keystone and a simple fanlight above. There are later additions to the sides and rear of the house. The rear elevation has twin gables and wrought iron railings that mimic the hall balustrade at Hotham House.

Inside, the principal staircase has a round open well with an open string. It is adorned with carved ornamentation below each tread, alternating iron-twist balusters, and a moulded handrail that features a semi-spiral curtail and an iron-twist terminal newel. The dado is finished with fielded panelling. There is a semicircular arch under the stairs leading to the rear part of the house, with moulded imposts, keyblocks, and moulded voussoirs, as well as fielded panelling on the soffits and reveals. The hall is stone-flagged.

The back stairs have a closed string, slender columnar balusters, a plain newel, and a moulded handrail. The principal ground floor room is fully panelled with fielded panelling, a moulded dado rail, and a modillion box cornice. The chimney-piece features a moulded architrave and brackets for the mantel-shelf, with a doorway that has a moulded architrave and a deep moulded cornice. The rear room contains fine late 18th-century composition ornament. On the first floor, windows have panelled window seats, and there are two wainscotted rooms, one with fielded panelling and the other with moulded panelling.
