Description
The lamp standard located on the pavement in front of 56, The Red House in Beverley is a late Georgian cast iron structure, dating from after 1826. It is believed to have been made by William Crosskill of Beverley. The lamp standard features a square, stepped base with stilted arches on each face of the lower step, and a wreath on each face of the upper step. Above this, an octagonal step leads to a column designed to resemble a fasces without an axe head, symbolizing a disused weapon of war. Rising from a narrow collar is a section modeled after Pompeiian bronze standard lamps, topped with a modern copper gas-type lantern. The lamp standard was relocated to its current position in late 2017.
