Description
Oak House is a late 19th-century building dated 1880, designed by J E Elwell with partial design contributions from Smith and Brodrick. It is constructed on a red brick base with applied half-timbering to the upper floors, and has a roof of dark small tiles. A three-light sloped dormer is present. The left gable features carved oak foliage to the bargeboards and incorporates a six-light mullion window. The first floor has a twelve-light mullion and transom window which overhangs slightly, while end pilasters support the attic storey, terminating in carved figures of men.
The ground floor features a five-sided bay of ten lights, and a recessed window behind a wooden balustrade above the entrance, which has a pentice hood. The doorway has a stone, moulded arched head above double doors of linen-fold panelling, partially glazed, preceded by four steps. A carved lintel reads 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis' and 'Labore et Virtute'. To the right is a six-sided bay of two storeys, with twelve lights, the upper portion half-timbered, and capped with a conical hood. The building has end stacks with twisted chimney pots on the left side.
The interior includes an oak ceiling and staircase designed respectively by Smith and Brodrick and J E Elwell, incorporating early Georgian materials. The dining room features a carved door, dado, and carved chimneypiece. The doorframe displays Regency revival detailing. The parquet flooring, along with other details, possibly reflects the influence of Elwell's travels in the Rhineland.
