Description
Foggathorpe House is a house dating from the mid-18th century and early 19th century. It comprises two parallel ranges arranged in an M-shaped layout, with the earlier range located at the rear. The house is constructed of brick in both English bond to the earlier section, and Flemish bond to the later section. The earlier section has a stone slate roof and the later section a Welsh slate roof. The house has two storeys and three bays, with single-storey, flat-roofed bays on either side. The main entrance features a half-glazed door beneath a radial fanlight, set within a Tuscan doorcase, flanked by sash windows with glazing bars beneath lintels incorporating fluted keystones. Blind windows with coped parapets are present on the flanking bays. The first floor has a central sash window with decorative margin lights, flanked by sash windows with glazing bars, all beneath similar lintels to the ground floor. The gables have shaped kneelers, and end stacks are present. The rear facade includes a reset original front door: a six-fielded-panel door beneath a radial fanlight, within a Doric doorcase featuring fluted pilasters and an open pediment. Inside, the rear section has a closed-string staircase with turned balusters to the hallway. The left reception room of the front section contains an elliptical-arched alcove, original brass fittings to the door, an acanthus cornice, and a vinescroll border to the ceiling. The right reception room features a fluted cornice.
