Description

Stainton Grange is a house dating from the early to mid-18th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It is constructed of hand-made brick in Flemish bond and features a renewed pantiled roof with brick chimney stacks. The building has a double-range plan under a two-span roof and is two stories tall with a five-bay garden front. The central entrance consists of three curved stone steps leading to a six-panel door with an overlight, flanked by replaced 12-pane sash windows. All window and door openings are set under rubbed-brick flat arches, although the window sills have been destroyed due to the lengthening of the sashes. The eaves are cogged, and the steeply-pitched roof has swept eaves, coped gables, shaped kneelers, and corniced end stacks. The rear range has similar window features, including a Venetian stair window with a radial-glazed head, as well as matching roof and chimney details.

Inside, the house features six-panel doors in architraves, some with panelled reveals, and panelled window shutters. The front range includes one ground-floor room with a bolection-moulded wood fireplace, and another ground-floor room with moulded skirting, a dado rail, a modillion ceiling cornice, and a panelled end wall that contains a fireplace, overmantel, and flanking round-arched cupboards. A first-floor bedroom also has a similar panelled end wall and a dentilled ceiling cornice. The central dogleg staircase in the rear range has two flights plus a landing rail, with two column-on-vase balusters per tread, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and a ramped wall string. The staircase hall features a Venetian stair window with fluted pilasters and a corniced ceiling.

There is a mid-20th century addition in a similar style on the left return of the rear range, but it is not of special interest.
