Description

Church Close is a house dating from around 1700, with mid-18th century bays added to the sides. It is built of Flemish bond red brick, with mid-18th century English bond brick used for the extensions. The house has a gabled Welsh slate roof and brick ridge stacks, which were originally end stacks of the 1700 house. The layout is originally three units and it stands two storeys high, featuring a seven-window range. The windows have gauged brick flat arches with raised flush keys above a late 19th century four-panelled door (two of the panels are glazed) and mid-19th century horned sashes. There are segmental arches over horned six-pane sashes. The additional mid-18th century bays have segmental and flat arches over two six-pane sashes, two mid-19th century horned sashes, and one one-light casement. There is also a mid to late 19th century rear range and a mid-18th century one-storey range to the left, constructed of English bond brick over chalk and flint rubble, featuring a brick band and dressings, a hipped old tile roof, a brick ridge stack, two plank doors, and mid to late 19th century casements at the rear.

Inside, the house has timber-framed partitions. There is a chamfered bressumer over an open fireplace and a chamfered roll-stopped bressumer to the right. The central hall includes a chamfered beam, a mid-18th century fireplace, a spice cupboard, and an unusual early 19th century winder staircase with a Gothick spandrel, leading to a landing with turned balusters. The roof has not been inspected but is likely to be of interest.
