Description

This is a canal bridge, built in 1818 and designed by George Leather. The bridge is constructed from brick with stone voussoirs, a string course, and stone detailing, although some brick patching has occurred. It features a single basket arch spanning the Pocklington Canal, with outswept parapets terminating in stone-capped square brick pillars. Segmental brick buttresses with rounded stone caps are located to either side of the arch. The canal towpath runs beneath the bridge on the west side.

The Pocklington Canal was constructed in the early 19th century to transport agricultural goods. Designed by George Leather Jnr, an experienced navigation engineer, the canal was completed in 1818 and extended for 9.5 miles. It served to transport goods like coal, lime, fertiliser, and agricultural produce. Following a sale to the York and North Midland Railway in 1847, trade declined, and the canal ceased commercial operation in 1932. Ownership subsequently passed to British Waterways. The canal remains navigable to Melbourne, with some lock restorations undertaken by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society. Coat’s Bridge is one of four bridges designed by George Leather on the canal. The bridge is designated at Grade II for its pre-1840 date, its design by a notable navigation engineer, its original condition, and its good architectural quality.
