Description
The Church of St Giles is a Grade II* listed building located in Bielby, East Yorkshire. It dates from the late 12th century, with the east and south walls and roof rebuilt in 1792, reusing some original materials. The church is constructed of stone, rendered and colourwashed, and features slate roofs, including slate hanging on the bellcote.
The structure consists of a 5-bay continuous nave and chancel, with a west bellcote that has square louvred openings beneath a pyramidal roof. The nave and chancel are supported by a buttress with offsets to the west. Notable architectural features include two round-headed chamfered windows that incorporate 12th-century beakheads as keystones. The north wall has a lancet window to the west and a three-light pointed window with Perpendicular tracery to the east. The round-headed east window is set under a recessed beaded hoodmould with a keystone, while the round-headed west door, rebuilt around 1792, incorporates 12th-century chevron and beakhead ornamentation.
Inside, there is a fluted stoup located on the west wall, close to the north jamb of the door. A cylindrical respond from the former 12th-century north aisle is visible at the west end, while the remainder, which is painted, is hidden behind plaster added around 1965. The church also features a 19th-century octagonal font on a column and base, along with a complete and unaltered set of early 19th-century box pews and a pulpit.
