Description
Bridge 225 on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, along with its gate piers and retaining walls, is a canal bridge and boundary walls built in the late 18th century, with alterations and additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of coursed stone and ashlar. The bridge features a single round arch and has a projecting band at road level, with plain coping on the parapets. These parapets include square-section gate piers topped with a cornice band and shallow pyramid caps at the south end. The canal boundary wall attached to the south end of the east side is approximately 15 meters long and 4 meters high, featuring pointed coping. A similar wall on the west side at the north end is about 30 meters long and has plain gate piers near the center. This bridge historically facilitated the road from Armley and the 'Botany Bay' wharves on the south side of the canal into the Armley Mills.
