Description
The bridge over the head race at Armley Mills, located on the west side of Canal Road in Leeds, was likely built around 1850 for John and William Gott. It features coursed stone, ashlar, and cast-iron railings. The structure includes a single shallow segmental arch with rusticated voussoirs and a band at road level. Stone square section bollards with bands and shallow pyramidal caps are present, along with parapet rails designed in the form of vases and flowers, supported by a thickened central standard. The retaining walls of the mill race connect to sluice gates, and the north wall retains remnants of railings as a parapet on its north side. The stonework on the north side of the head race shows several alterations and may include remains from a fulling mill built around 1750, which was demolished when Thomas Lloyd constructed new mills and widened the millrace in 1788.
