Description

Hagg Bridge is a canal bridge dating to 1818, designed by George Leather. It is constructed of brick with stone voussoirs (the wedge-shaped pieces that form an arch) and stone coping. The bridge has two basket arches: a larger arch spans the canal, and a smaller arch crosses a beck immediately to the northwest. The towpath passes beneath the canal arch on the north side. Rectangular buttresses are positioned on either side of each arch. The smaller arch displays some stonework on its southwest side, while some of the original brickwork has been replaced with 20th-century brick. There is no brick parapet, but a concrete post and metal rail fence runs alongside the road.

The Pocklington Canal was built in the early 19th century to transport agricultural goods from the East Riding to larger urban centres. Designed by George Leather Jnr, an experienced navigation engineer, the canal opened in 1818, running 9.5 miles from the River Derwent to south of Pocklington. After 1847, ownership passed to the York and North Midland Railway, causing a decline in trade, with the final cargo carried in 1932. Subsequently, the bridge passed to British Waterways in 1963 and is now navigable as far as Melbourne, with some locks having been restored by the Pocklington Canal Amenity Society, though full restoration is not planned. Hagg Bridge is one of four bridges over the canal designed by George Leather. It is designated at Grade II for being a pre-1840 canal structure designed by a recognised engineer, remaining largely original, and showcasing good architectural quality with a strong design.
