Description

The transit sheds located to the southeast of Morpeth Branch Dock were built around 1872. They are constructed from rock-faced sandstone and feature Welsh slate roofs. The structure consists of a range of four single-storey sheds, which have a series of wide openings with sliding doors facing the dockside. The street side of the sheds is mostly solid but includes recessed downspouts. The two end walls have segmentally arched openings and circular ventilation windows at the top of the gables. Each shed is separated by cross walls that extend above the roofline, topped with tumbled stone copings. There are some wide doorways connecting the internal cross walls. The internal spaces are open and supported by timber Queen post trusses, with wrought iron ties and braces running laterally and longitudinally. These sheds were built during the expansion of Morpeth Dock in 1872-1873, overseen by engineer G.F. Lyster, and they are notable for being the only stone transit sheds on Merseyside.
