Description
The locomotive sheds, built in the mid-19th century, were designed to serve the Admiralty Incline Railway, which transported stone from the Admiralty Quarries to Portland Harbour for the construction of breakwaters.
Constructed from coursed Portland limestone, the sheds feature corrugated asbestos roofs. They are aligned roughly north-south and are located to the east of the former incline railway, now known as Incline Road.
The structure consists of three locomotive sheds, with the first two positioned side by side and the third attached at the southern end. Sheds one and two have segmental arched doorways and flat-headed windows along each side, which are now boarded up. Both of these sheds have hipped roofs with overhanging eaves. Shed three extends from shed two, featuring a hipped roof at its northern end where it connects to shed two, and a gabled roof at its southern end, which includes a large door with a flat lintel.
Inside, sheds one and two retain timber king post truss roofs, while shed three has common rafters with collars. The internal walls are mostly bare stone, with some areas of whitewash, and there is a surviving chimney breast in one of the sheds.
