Description

The boundary wall and gate piers, dating from around 1875, are constructed from Portland ashlar. They consist of eight sets of gate piers connected by walls, extending from the west end of St. Peter's churchyard to the front of Alma Terrace. The large square piers are set on a moulded plinth and topped with heavy pyramidal caps. Each pier features small inset colonettes at the corners. The piers are linked by a series of stepped wall panels that rise to approximately 1.4 meters, topped with saddle-back coping and a roll mould over sunk panels, with a plinth that continues with the gate piers. At the southern end, the wall returns at a right angle to the face of No. 1 Alma Terrace. At the western end, it serves as the boundary between the churchyard and the Vicarage, running along the north side of the churchyard and including another pair of matching gate piers opposite the church's north transept, before returning along the southeast boundary of the churchyard. A boundary stone, featuring the WD arrow above an anchor and the number 70, is built into the wall at its western end, facing Grove Road. This substantial structure plays an important role in connecting the related buildings and defining the street, linking with the wall along the north side of Grove Road to the west and the tall wall of HM Young Offenders Institution to the south.
