School extension, former house of Assistant Governor, Portland Prison. c 1870, possibly from office of Capt. Du Cane, RE. Portland ashlar, slate roof. Compact L-plan, with slightly set-forward wide gable, left, and set-back lower wing. Two storeys, 1+1-windowed. Paired sashes with horizontal bar in chamfer surrounds with stops to jambs and central mullion; flush, deep chamfer cills. Coped gable with small roll mould saddle stone above blind oculus in flush relieving arch. Plinth, mid moulded string, moulded eaves, 3 large stacks on moulded skirts and with heavy cappings to Lombard bands. The set-back wing has two small sashes above a plank door in arched opening with Romanesque mouldings, and drip course; left return gable coped, with kneelers and central stack. Right return has a tall stair window to right, the string stepped below its cill. Subsidiary Features: At the rear of the site is a lofty ashlar boundary wall incorporating a wide blocked opening with rusticated quoins and voussoirs to segmental head; this formerly an access from the house to the adjoining prison. An important unit in a good group, set between St. Peter's Church (qv) and Grove County Infants' School (qv), and from its detailing clearly from the same design office.
