Description
Morpeth Dock is a dock and wharf built in 1847, which was reconstructed and enlarged in 1868. It was designed by engineers J.M. Rendel and later J.B. Hartley. The structure is faced with granite and includes some cast-iron dock furniture. The main basin is connected to the River Mersey by a lock that is also lined with stone, with the stone laid to interlock for added strength. The raised surfaces of the wharves feature cast-iron hatches that provided access to the hydraulic power system used to operate the gates, which was installed in the 1880s. There are flights of steps leading down to the water. This dock was part of the initial phase of development at Birkenhead, which underwent significant redesign and reconstruction during the 1860s.
