Description
Egerton Dock is a dock that opened in 1847, designed by engineer J.M. Rendel. It is constructed from coursed and squared sandstone, featuring some cast-iron dock furniture. The dock has a square shape with stone walls and wharf surfaces, and includes cast-iron bollards. It is the only major surviving element of Rendel's original plan for Birkenhead Docks. In the 1880s, alterations were made when the original lock system, which was meant to connect the dock to a proposed low water basin, was removed. Although the dock is now partially infilled, it is believed to be intact.
