Description
The Hydraulic Generating Station is a brick engine house and tower built in 1868 by J.B. Hartley. It features rock-faced stone dressings and stands three storeys high with seven bays; the first two bays are lower and were mostly rebuilt after bomb damage. At the rear of the right return is a tower with a machicolated embattled parapet that has alternating large and small embrasures and quoins. The ground floor has lancet windows in the first two bays, while the other bays feature paired round-headed windows with pointed stone heads. There is also a round-headed window with pointed stone arch heads. The first floor has a round-headed window across the last five bays, with paired round-headed lights below tympana that are pierced with roundels. The second floor has paired windows with shouldered lintels. The entrance to the third bay has a round arch with a pointed stone arch head and original heavily framed paired doors. The right return includes an entrance and a three-light window on the first floor. There is a canted connecting block to the projecting stone tower, which is weathered at the second floor level and has higher angle buttresses. Balconies with round-headed entrances and clock faces are present on both the front and rear. The top stage features machicolations, square openings, and an embattled parapet with notched merlons. The left return has four bays with a projecting parapet, paired windows, and two entrances, while the rear is similar in design.
