Description
The accumulator tower, located on the south side of the river entrance to Alfred Pier Dock in Wallasey, dates from 1860 and is possibly designed by J.B. Hartley. It is constructed of brick with rock-faced stone dressings and features a square, two-stage design. The tower has a stone base string course, a corbelled cornice, and a coping at the parapet, along with quoins on the clasping buttresses.
The first stage includes windows with rock-faced jambs and ashlar pointed arches that have round soffits; there are paired lights on the west and east sides, and a single light on the north side. The south facade features an entrance with a similar arch and original timber doors. The top stage has round-headed lights with rock-faced jambs and keys to ashlar lintels, arranged in pairs on the north and south sides and in triples on the east and west sides. The tower is only two stages high because most of its shaft is situated below ground.
