Description

The pumping station, built in 1886 and extended in 1908, is located to the east of Wallasey Dock. It is constructed from common brick with red brick dressings and features slate roofs. The building is single-storey and measures 9 by 3 bays, with the first 3 bays forming the extension and a rear range of 6 bays. The front has a round-arched applied arcade, two string courses, and a top cornice. The gables are coped, and there are clasping buttresses at the corners. The large keys of the arcade project upward as flat pilasters, with smaller intermediate pilasters. Six pilasters of the arcade contain small niches. The 1st, 4th, and 9th bays are blind, while the others have paired segmental-headed windows with round windows above, all featuring iron small-pane glazing. The roof includes rectangular ridge louvres and has pitched roofs. The right return has the first 3 bays gabled, with a round-headed window similar to the front facade. The next 3 bays are also gabled, featuring 3 round-headed windows that are interrupted by a later lean-to extension, with a louvred round window above. An octagonal stack projects from the center, adorned with 4 string courses and a machicolated cap. The left return is similar, with a large segmental-headed entrance. The return of the rear range is recessed to the left and resembles the right return. The rear facing the dock has been altered.
