Description
The Ventilation Station of the Mersey Road Tunnel, built between 1925 and 1934, was designed by engineers Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, with architecture by Herbert J. Rowse. This structure features a brick-faced, steel-framed construction and is characterized by its massive twin towers. The towers are largely blind, with double doors on the south side that are flanked by three blind lancet slits. The doors are adorned with chevron bands and have architraves made of brick arranged in rippled courses, featuring central wing motifs. The towers also have ribbed brick quoins, blind lancets, and geometrical ribbed decoration near the top. This building was constructed to house fans as part of the ventilation system for the road tunnel.
