II

Ventilation Station of the Mersey Road Tunnel. 1925-34. By Sir Basil Mott and J.A.Brodie, engineers, and Herbert J.Rowse, architect. Brick faced steel framed construction. Tower comprised of a series of grouped geometric blocks, largely blind but with small doorway in eastern elevation, and double doors in northern elevation. Doors themselves original features, with bands of chevron and scallop decoration. Architraves formed from rippled coursing of brick, with wing motifs in centre. Some ornamentation in the brickwork, with diamond frieze at base and giant cross motif in the largest of the blocks. Chevron bands of brickwork mark the tops of the towers, and the largest block is marked by a frieze of recessed panels or slits. Built to house fans as part of the ventilation system for the road tunnel. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N and Hubbard E: Cheshire: Harmondsworth: 1971-).
