Description

The Ventilation Station of the Mersey Road Tunnel, built between 1925 and 1934, was designed by engineers Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, with architecture by Herbert J. Rowse. This structure features brick-faced steel framed construction and consists of a tower made up of grouped geometric blocks. The tower is mostly blind, with a small doorway on the eastern elevation and double doors on the northern elevation. These doors are original and decorated with chevron and scallop patterns. The architraves are created from rippled brick coursing, featuring wing motifs in the center. The brickwork includes some ornamentation, such as a diamond frieze at the base and a giant cross motif on the largest block. The tops of the towers are highlighted by chevron bands of brickwork, and the largest block has a frieze of recessed panels or slits. This station was built to house fans as part of the ventilation system for the road tunnel.
