Description
The former dock entrance to the Mersey Road Tunnel in Birkenhead is a disused structure built between 1931 and 1934. Designed by engineers Sir Basil Mott and J.A. Brodie, with architecture by Herbert J. Rowse, it is constructed from white Portland stone. The entrance features retaining walls that mark the approach on either side of the tunnel portal, with low terminal blocks at each end. The design is in a Moderne style with Egyptian detailing. The tunnel entrance is adorned with a low relief shield flanked by winged beasts above it. The retaining walls have a scalloped cornice and are built on a curve to each side. The terminal blocks are stepped in plan and battered in section. Additionally, there are narrow bands of windows and stone grid-work with a ribbed cornice band that includes an arrow motif in low relief.
