Description
The former police booth and gate piers at the entrance to Woodside lairage, Birkenhead Docks, date back to 1868. The police booth is constructed from rusticated sandstone ashlar and features a Welsh slate roof. It is a single-storey, single-cell structure with polygonal ends and a rear entrance. The outer elevation has single-light windows that are divided by attached shafts. The booth also includes a heavy plinth, cornice, and parapet, along with a side wall stack. The gate piers are similarly made of rusticated ashlar and have a heavy plinth and cornice. This booth was built to manage the main road and pedestrian access to the dock, as part of the work carried out by engineer G.F. Lyster.
