Description
The River View, formerly known as the Queen's Arms Public House, is a public house and a row of three houses built around 1840. The structure features stucco over brick with roofs made of Welsh slate and concrete tiles. It stands three stories tall, with a seven-window range facing Bridge Street and a four-window range on Chester Street, connected by a curved corner.
The Bridge Street elevation is highlighted by full-height pilasters above rusticated stucco on the ground floor. There is a recessed four-panelled door with an overlight at the corner, along with an inserted window to the right. The Chester Street side has a doorway flanked by a canted bay window and a three-light pub window to the right, with a four-pane sash window to the left. Another doorway is located at the left-hand end. The basement area of the public house is enclosed by spearhead cast-iron railings.
On the Bridge Street side, there are paired doors with overlights set within a simply moulded architrave, accompanied by paired shafts. An inserted canted bay window and a doorway in an architrave with paired shafts can also be found to the right. The upper windows consist of 12-pane sashes, with alternate windows featuring moulded architraves and pediments, including one tripartite sash. The attic has six-pane sashes, some of which are now missing. The building is topped with a moulded cornice and parapet, and axial stacks are present. These buildings were once part of a longer terrace that has since been partially demolished.
