Description

The dock gateman's hut, built around 1866 and likely designed by John Bernard Hartley, is located on the west side of the Tower Road bascule bridge at the west end of Alfred Dock where it meets the East Float. This small building features an octagonal plan with long sides on the north and south and projecting entrances on all four sides.

Constructed from mellow red brick with sandstone dressings and slate roof coverings, the hut has a brick and sandstone plinth, with sandstone used for sills and lintels. Each side of the building has windows and doorways, all featuring shallow pointed-arched heads and deep angled sills. The main entrance is on the south side, which has a modern steel access door, while the other three entrances are boarded over as of 2021. The hut has a shallow polygonal roof concealed by a parapet, adorned with a dentilled eaves that includes two stepped tiers of dentils. A tall polygonal double-flue chimneystack rises from the center of the north side.

Inside, the hut is understood to consist of two rooms located in the eastern and western halves, accessible via a vestibule at the south entrance. However, the ceiling in the eastern room has collapsed.
