Description

The iron-framed shed located to the south of Downing's Malthouse in Gloucester was built in 1867 for the Midland Railway Company. This transit shed features an iron frame clad in corrugated iron and has a hipped slate roof. It is square in plan, consisting of 4x4 bays, with the roof designed in two parallel rectangular sections. The structure is single-storey, and the roof extends out towards the quay. It is supported by cast-iron columns with moulded capitals and features wrought-iron trusses. Originally constructed for the temporary storage of grain sacks before they were transported by rail, this shed is a well-preserved example of its type and represents mid-19th century iron frame architecture. It is part of an impressive group of dock structures.
