Description

The former Midland Railway locomotive shed, built in 1873 for the Midland Railway, is a disused railway structure. It features polychrome brickwork and a corrugated sheet roof. The building is single storey and has a 15-window range of iron-framed windows, which have white brick round-arched heads, margin, and triangular glazing. The windows are set on stone sills and a blue brick sill band. The last window on the right at both the front and rear, as well as the windows on the right end, are blocked. The long sides of the shed have windows set within a blind arcade of white brick arches on red brick pilasters. The building has a plinth and a dentilled eaves cornice, with the rear being similar in design. There is a slightly remodelled lower range with a pedestrian entrance at the right end. The left end features a wide door frame under a segmental arch, with an iron lintel supported by a central iron pier; the left half of this door frame is blocked while the right half remains open.

Inside, the shed retains its original roof structure, which includes wooden principals, collars, purlins, and metal bracing and tie rods. There is minor damage to the roof structure in the six western bays due to a fire in 2000. This building is a rare and little altered example of a Midland Railway locomotive shed.
